Chess Strategy for Beginners
Strategy starts when there is no immediate tactic.
Getting started
Beginner chess strategy means improving your worst piece, keeping your king safe, making useful trades, controlling key squares, creating targets, and choosing pawn breaks that help your pieces.
Improve the worst piece
When no tactic is available, find your least useful piece and give it a better square. This simple habit creates plans from quiet positions.
- Find the piece with the fewest useful moves.
- Name its dream square.
- Ask what move helps it get there.
Trade with purpose
Do not trade because you can. Trade because the resulting position favors your remaining pieces, pawn structure, or king safety.
- Trade attackers when defending.
- Trade defenders when attacking.
- Trade bad pieces for good pieces.
Create a target
Strategy becomes easier when the opponent has a weakness: an isolated pawn, backward pawn, weak square, unsafe king, or overloaded defender.
- Fix the target.
- Attack it with more pieces.
- Do not allow easy counterplay.
