Battery

Two or more pieces line up to attack the same target or line.

The idea

A battery stores force. Bishops and queens, doubled rooks, or queen-rook lines often build pressure until a defender breaks.

Why it matters

Batteries teach harmony: pieces become stronger when pointed at the same problem.

Recognize it

  • Two line pieces can share a file or diagonal.
  • A defender is pinned or overloaded.
  • The target is near the king.

Common mistakes

  • Building a battery with no target.
  • Trading one battery piece too early.
  • Ignoring opponent counterplay while stacking pieces.
