Chess concept reference
Clearance Sacrifice
A piece moves or sacrifices itself to open a square or line.
The idea
Clearance is about making room. Sometimes the best move is not the piece that gives mate, but the piece that gets out of the way.
Why it matters
Clearance sacrifices improve your ability to see multi-piece coordination.
Recognize it
- A key square is occupied by your own piece.
- A line piece would be powerful if unblocked.
- The sacrifice comes with check or tempo.
Common mistakes
- Clearing a line without a concrete follow-up.
- Missing defensive captures.
- Sacrificing when a quiet move also works.
