A decoy move changes the board geometry by dragging a defender, king, or valuable piece to the wrong square.

• A key defender can be forced to a bad square.
• A capture comes with check or mate threat.
• The target square creates a follow-up tactic.

Common mistakes

• Luring a piece without a forcing follow-up.
• Confusing decoy with a simple trade.
• Missing the opponent declining the bait.
