Discovered Attack

One piece moves away and reveals an attack from another piece.

The idea

Discovered attacks feel like two moves in one. The moving piece can create a new threat while uncovering a rook, bishop, or queen behind it.

Why it matters

Discovered attacks are a gateway to forcing calculation and initiative.

Recognize it

  • A line piece is blocked by your own piece.
  • The blocking piece can move with tempo.
  • A discovered check is possible.

Common mistakes

  • Moving the blocking piece without creating a second threat.
  • Missing the opponent response to the revealed line.
  • Opening a line that helps the opponent more.
