Chess concept reference

Greek Gift Sacrifice

Bxh7+ sacrifice pattern against a castled king.

The idea

The Greek Gift is a classic attacking sacrifice. It works only when the supporting pieces, king escape squares, and follow-up checks align.

Why it matters

It is a perfect example of tactical sacrifice requiring harmony.

Recognize it

  • The knight can jump to g5.
  • The queen can join on h5 or d3.
  • The defender lacks pieces around the king.

Common mistakes

  • Sacrificing because the pattern looks familiar.
  • Missing ...Kg6 or defensive resources.
  • Ignoring the center.
