Hanging Pieces

Pieces that are undefended or tactically loose.

The idea

Loose pieces are tactical magnets. Many forks, pins, skewers, and deflections work because one piece cannot be safely recaptured.

Why it matters

Reducing hanging pieces is the fastest route out of beginner chess.

Recognize it

  • A piece has no defender.
  • The defender is pinned.
  • A tactic attacks two loose pieces.

Common mistakes

  • Checking only your own threats.
  • Moving a defender away accidentally.
  • Assuming attacked pieces are protected.
