Chess concept reference

Initiative

The ability to make threats that force the opponent to respond.

The idea

The initiative is pressure with tempo. It may be worth material if your threats keep improving and the opponent cannot organize.

Why it matters

Initiative is the practical engine behind attacking chess.

Recognize it

  • Your moves make threats with development.
  • The opponent must spend tempi defending.
  • A material sacrifice opens key lines.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing activity with real threats.
  • Stopping to grab pawns.
  • Letting the opponent trade the attacking pieces.
