Piece Coordination

Pieces work together when they attack, defend, and support shared squares.

The idea

Coordination is the difference between active-looking pieces and useful pieces. Good coordination makes tactics appear and blunders disappear.

Why it matters

Coordination is the foundation under tactics, defense, and conversion.

Recognize it

  • Pieces defend each other and key squares.
  • A piece has no role or no defender.
  • A tactic works because defenders are disconnected.

Common mistakes

  • Developing pieces to squares with no plan.
  • Leaving pieces undefended.
  • Trading your coordinated pieces for inactive ones.
