Removing the Defender

Capture or drive away the piece that holds the position together.

The idea

Many tactics begin by identifying the only defender. Remove it, and a capture, mate, or promotion becomes possible.

Why it matters

It trains you to see pieces by responsibility, not only by value.

Recognize it

  • Only one piece protects the target.
  • That defender can be captured with tempo.
  • A recapture would leave mate or material hanging.

Common mistakes

  • Removing a defender that can be replaced.
  • Ignoring the order of captures.
  • Forgetting the defender may be pinned.
