Rook Activity

Rooks work best on open files, seventh ranks, and behind passed pawns.

The idea

Rook activity often matters more than pawn count. An active rook checks, cuts off kings, attacks pawns, and supports passed pawns from behind.

Why it matters

Rook endings are common, and activity is often the difference between winning and drawing.

Recognize it

  • A rook can enter the seventh rank.
  • A passed pawn needs support from behind.
  • The enemy king can be cut off.

Common mistakes

  • Defending passively from the front.
  • Trading into a passive rook ending.
