Skewer

A valuable piece is attacked and forced to move, exposing another target.

The idea

A skewer is the pin turned inside out. You attack the high-value piece first, and when it moves, the piece behind it falls.

Why it matters

Skewers build discipline around line geometry and forcing checks.

Recognize it

  • King and rook share a rank, file, or diagonal.
  • A checking line attack is available.
  • The front piece must move.

Common mistakes

  • Ignoring checks as candidate moves.
  • Missing diagonal skewers with bishops.
  • Trading into a position where the skewer disappears.
