Zwischenzug

An in-between move played before the expected recapture.

The idea

Zwischenzug asks whether the obvious reply can wait. A check, threat, or capture inserted first may change the whole sequence.

Why it matters

It breaks autopilot and improves calculation order.

Recognize it

  • A recapture looks automatic.
  • You have a check or forcing move first.
  • The move order changes who is under threat.

Common mistakes

  • Auto-recapturing.
  • Inserting a move that lets the opponent escape.
  • Missing the opponent zwischenzug.
